Abstract
Urban rivers, as one of the most significant components of blue–green infrastructure, play a vital role in enhancing environmental quality, promoting mental health, fostering social interactions, and supporting urban sustainability. Nevertheless, human interventions, ecological degradation, and inadequate planning have diminished the ecological functions of many urban rivers and adversely affected citizens’ perceptions and experiences of these spaces. The present study aims to evaluate the environmental quality of the landscape along the Zarrineh-Rood within the city of Shahin Dezh, based on environmental psychology indicators, and to identify the factors influencing the enhancement of this public space. In terms of its objective, this research is applied, while methodologically it adopts a descriptive–analytical approach. Research data were collected through documentary studies, field observations, and questionnaire surveys completed by users of the study area. The collected data were analyzed using statistical methods and environmental quality assessment indicators. The findings indicate that factors such as legibility, safety, visual quality, vitality, accessibility, vegetation cover, the presence of water, recreational amenities, and opportunities for social interaction have significant effects on users’ perceptions of environmental quality and overall satisfaction. Furthermore, ecological deterioration, inadequate facilities and services, deficiencies in the design of public spaces, and weak landscape management were identified as the principal factors reducing the attractiveness and functionality of the study area. The results suggest that improving the quality of riverfront landscapes through environmental psychology–based design approaches, conserving ecological values, strengthening blue–green infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of public spaces can contribute to improved public health and well-being while promoting sustainable urban development and reinforcing the relationship between people and nature.
